A California family got a tear-jerking surprise after firefighters rescued their beloved kitty from a blaze that ravaged their home — and reunited the furry escapee with its grateful owners.

The Grass Valley Fire Department shared a heartwarming video of the reunion after a fire ripped through an apartment complex in the Northern California city on Oct. 2, forcing residents to evacuate.

Two units sustained moderate to major fire damage, leaving both homes uninhabitable, according to the department.

“Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire to the two units involved upon their arrival, preventing it from spreading further through the building,” officials said.

But amid the destruction, crews managed to save one precious life — a black-and-white cat whose return brought its family to tears.

Video posted by the department on Oct. 7 captured firefighters handing the rescued kitty back to its owner. At least two family members appeared overcome with emotion, while one rushed down the stairs after spotting the little furball in a firefighter’s arms.

“Sometimes the best part of the job comes after the fire is out,” the department wrote on Facebook.

“After last week’s fire, we had the opportunity to reunite this kitty with the residents impacted by the incident.”

“Moments like this remind us that behind every emergency are people, families, pets, homes, and memories that matter.”

The department also credited additional staffing made possible by voter-approved Measure B with helping crews respond to emergencies across Grass Valley and neighboring communities.

Approved by voters in March 2024, the measure provided funding to increase daily staffing to three firefighters on the department’s fire engines.

Since the staffing boost, crews have stopped numerous fires before they could spread, limiting damage and losses, officials said.

“To our Grass Valley community—our friends and neighbors—thank you. Thank you for supporting Measure B,” the department wrote.

No one was injured in the blaze and the displaced residents are getting help from the American Red Cross.
