California cop killer tragedy takes heartbreaking turn as reason for abruptly cancelled memorial revealed

A planned memorial for slain former San Francisco cop Ann Mannix was abruptly canceled as the beloved officer’s devastated family struggles to process the unthinkable circumstances of her death.

The San Francisco Police Officers Association organized a remembrance event for Mannix, a beloved former deputy chief who was gunned down by her husband, Kevin Mannix, along with their 24-year-old daughter in a suspected murder-suicide at their Marin County home Sunday.

The memorial event planned for noon Thursday at the police department’s San Francisco headquarters was canceled Wednesday evening because the family felt it was simply too soon, The California Post is told.

Mannix, 68, turned the gun on himself after killing his two family members, authorities said.

Friends and kin have been left shattered by the killing of Ann Mannix, 65, and the couple’s daughter Katie Mannix, who was studying to become a nurse.

The couple has two other surviving children, a daughter and a son.

The family has received an outpouring of community support, including from local pols and loved ones who remembered Mannix as a law enforcement pioneer and loving mother.

Mannix was the first woman to lead SFPD’s SWAT team before helming the Field Operations and Special Operations bureaus. She retired in 2021.

Friends described her as funny, big-hearted and excited for a retirement filled with travel, family time and civic volunteer work.

“She was upbeat and looking forward to so many great and fun things in the future,” Martha Ehmann Conte told The Post.

“She was a joy and a light.”

“As a union and a family, we must navigate this dark moment together,” said SFPOA president Louis Wong in a statement after the shooting.

“While the Marin County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, our immediate focus must be on supporting the surviving family members, processing our collective grief, and taking care of one another.”

While no specific motive has been identified in the murder, Ann Mannix’s friends told The Post that the couple’s marriage was on the rocks.

“She did tell me she was getting divorced, and it was the best thing and she was looking forward to the future,” attorney Marie Hurabiell told The Post.

Still, there was little sign that mild-mannered Kevin Mannix was capable of such violence, Ann Mannix’s childhood friend of 60 years, Alexa O’Brien told The Post.

“She had high hopes of being a grandmother soon,” the friend said. “You know, she was a friend to everybody.”
