The Knicks found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter. Just like before those heroic playoff moments.
Except this time, Captain Clutch struggled when it mattered most Tuesday, OG Anunoby committed a costly turnover and the Knicks became the rare team to lose on their own Ring Night, 106-100, to the Sixers.
Brunson shot 1 for 5 in the final five minutes, including an airballed trey with 10 seconds remaining that sealed New York’s defeat. The point guard shot just 6 for 19 overall with just two points in the fourth quarter, including a botched open runner.
Karl-Anthony Towns, who struggled for much of the evening, came alive in the fourth quarter and finished with 19 points and 12 boards.
But the rest of the starters struggled and the Knicks were bombarded by Philly point guard Tyrese Maxey, who finished with 28 points.
The Knicks blew it at the end of the third quarter. With 1.5 seconds left, Miles McBride threw an inbounds pass directly out of bounds. Philadelphia took possession and Jaylen Brown nailed a buzzer-beating trey for a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Knicks became the first home team to lose on Ring Night since the 2020 Lakers, and that game was played in an empty arena because of the pandemic.
Before Tuesday, the NBA defending champs were 64-15 in their home openers.
