Dalvin Cook has a new home as the veteran running back has signed a deal to join the Dallas Cowboys‘ practice squad.

The 29-year-old Cook spent the 2023 season with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens after playing the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings.

Cook is eligible to be called up to the Cowboys’ Week 1 roster, if needed. For now, he will start the season with the practice squad.

“Dalvin is someone we all have an appreciation for his career,” said Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones. “We had hoped as time went along this offseason we’d have an opportunity to to look at a player of his stature if the right circumstances came along and they came along. He’s in good shape, had a good workout and can really help us out this year.”

In 15 games last season with the Jets, Cook ran for 214 yards on 67 attempts with zero touchdowns.

Cook was one of the NFL’s most productive backs in his prime with the Vikings. He made four straight Pro Bowls from 2019-2022 while tallying 1,300-plus yards in each of those campaigns.

Cook had shoulder surgery in the 2023 offseason, and the Vikings released him before the start of training camp. After signing with the Jets he took on a backup role as part of a committee.

The Jets released Cook before their season finale, and he signed with the Ravens for the postseason. He carried the ball eight times for 23 yards in Baltimore’s divisional-round win over the Houston Texans. He didn’t play in Baltimore’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship. He had been a free agent throughout the offseason.

Cook will join a Cowboys running back room that features Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn.

Cook met with the Cowboys this week ahead of Tuesday’s roster cutdown day. He reportedly had a visit scheduled with the Indianapolis Colts later this week, but that can now be canceled.
