Nationals run into horrific double play against Yankees in brutal baserunning blunder

The Nationals ran into a wild double play against the Yankees on Wednesday night.

It all started in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second and nobody out when Jose Tena hit a flyball over the head of center fielder Aaron Judge.

The ball caromed off the wall and Judge relayed it into shortstop Anthony Volpe’s hands.

That’s when things got weird.

The lead runner, Joey Gallo, slowed down around third while the trailing runner, Juan Yepez, was also heading to third.

Both runners would get into rundowns of their own with the ball passing from the catcher to the first baseman covering second and back again.

Finally, the third baseman Jazz Chisholm tagged Gallo out near third.

The Nationals could have stopped the damage there, preserving a two-on, one-out situation, but Tena leaked off first base.

Chisholm zipped the ball over to second baseman Gleyber Torres as Tena tried to get back to the bag to no avail, completing the 8-6-2-3-2-5-4 double play.

Washington was left with just a runner on second and two outs after one of the most embarrassing baserunning gaffes of the season.

The Nationals would hang on, taking the game 5-2 despite running themselves out of the eighth.
