How Luis Severino and Sean Manaea may factor into the Mets’ plans for unsettled 2025 rotation

Less turned into more for the Mets rotation this season, leading to the possibility for a 2025 encore from at least one of the two pieces added through free agency last winter.

Soon it will be up to president of baseball operations David Stearns and his staff to decide whether Luis Severino or Sean Manaea — or perhaps both — should return to help anchor next year’s rotation.

Severino is headed to free agency at the conclusion of a one-year contract worth $13 million. Manaea signed a two-year deal worth $28 million containing an opt-out that he is certain to exercise.

Both were deemed reasonable gambles after the team went the marquee route in previous seasons with the additions of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, both of whom had health issues during their stints with the Mets.
