Anti-Mamdani super PAC targets co-op, condo residents to oppose ‘green’ candidate

An anti-Zohran Mamdani super PAC launched a citywide campaign to mobilize owners of co-ops and condos to vote against the lefty Democratic nominee and mayoral front-runner over his backing of green energy edicts.

SAVENYC — founded by ex-Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey and former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly — has canvassers delivering flyers to up to 832,000 condo and co-op units to inform about 1.4 million voters about Mamdani’s position on the Climate Mobilization Emissions Law of 2019, or Local Law 97.

Mamdani has vowed to strictly enforce the green energy mandate, which requires buildings with more than 25,000 square feet to replace their old heating oil and natural gas boilers and switch to electric heat to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

Mamdani’s green platform on his campaign website says he would “lead a massive decarbonization and climate resiliency process citywide,” though he also said he would help middle-income homeowners afford the mandate.

“This will include building out renewable energy on our abundant public lands and fulfilling the vision of Local Law 97 through greater enforcement and assistance from the City for middle income homeowners,” his platform says.

The mandate would help New York City reach the goal of a 40 percent reduction by the year 2030 and 80 percent reduction in citywide emissions by calendar year 2050.

City officials previously told The Post that most of the 50,000 buildings were already in compliance with the law.

But McCaughey and Kelly claim the edict will cost apartment owners a fortune.

“Dear Fellow New Yorkers: If Zohran Mamdani wins the mayor’s race, condo and co-op owners risk losing their homes. He’s the only candidate who backs rigorous enforcement of Local Law 97, which will force one million Homeowners like you to foot the enormous cost of converting oil or natural gas heat to electric heat throughout your building. It will cost each building millions of dollars,” McCaughey and Kelly said in the notices sent to co-op and condo buildings.

Buildings that don’t start the conversion in non-fossil energy usage for the next two years will face huge fines “also to be paid by you,” they said.

“If Mamdani wins the mayoralty, he’ll strongly enforce Local Law 97. You’ll be the victims. Your monthly maintenance will go up, possibly by $1,000 a month or more, or you’ll get assessments,” the letter claims.

The alternative is to sell apartments at “fire sale” prices or “say goodbye to your life savings,” the flyer claims.

“If everyone works together to vote against Mamdani, he can be defeated. That will mean defeating enforcement of Local Law 97 and showing city politicians that condo and co-op owners can’t be pushed around anymore. It takes turning out to vote for anyone but Mamdani — and sharing this information with your neighbors.”

“Vote for any candidate except Mamdani. All the other candidates are pledging to work with co-op and condo owners to change this unfair law.”

The Mamdani campaign had no immediate comment.
