Former President Donald Trump “is safe” after gunfire was reported nearby in Florida, his campaign announced on Sunday.
“Multiple shots fired at Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach where the former president is golfing today,” POLITICO’s Meridith McGraw reported on X.
Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, said in a brief statement, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”
Law enforcement sources initially told the New York Post that two people exchanged gunfire outside the club, targeting each other and not Trump.
The report, citing the same insiders, emphasized that Trump was “never in danger” and the shooting happened in an area outside the club known for lots of crime.
However, in an update, the New York Post reported sources who said a Secret Service agent opened fire on a single man who was spotted with a possible gun on the golf course and was later arrested by local police on I-95.
In mid-July, a shooter opened fire on Trump while he was speaking to a crowd during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The former president survived, though he was hit in his right ear by a bullet. One rallygoer, 50-year-old fireman Corey Comperatore, was killed. Two other attendees were wounded.
Secret Service snipers quickly took out the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, who unleashed the attack with a rifle from a nearby roof.
Multiple investigations ensued, with questions swirling about how law enforcement failed to stop the gunman in Butler before the shooting. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned amid blowback.
“Again folks!” Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s eldest son, posted to X on Sunday. “SHOTS FIRED at Trump Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.”
He added that local law enforcement said an AK-47 was discovered in the bushes and a suspect had “reportedly” been apprehended.
“The Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are “investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m.,” said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
“The former president is safe,” Guglielmi continued, adding that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office would “soon” have more details to share.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris “have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing,” the White House said in a statement.
“They are relieved to know that he is safe,” the White House added. “They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
Harris, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, went head-to-head against Trump in their first and possibly final debate last week. They are poised to face off in the 2024 election in November.
