NFL news updates: Davante Adams reportedly wants trade, Rashee Rice undergoing tests, Vikings remain undefeated

Week 4 is in the books, and we still have a surprise undefeated team: the Minnesota Vikings, led by their MVP candidate QB, Sam Darnold. Just like Geno Smith two seasons ago with the Seattle Seahawks, a quarterback’s entire future can change with the right combination of coaches and teammates.

While no one is concerned about Darnold right now, the Indianapolis Colts are likely breathing a sigh of relief on the health of QB Anthony Richardson. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday that Richardson is considered “day to day” with oblique and abdominal strains and could play on Sunday against the Jaguars. He left Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (a 27-24 win for the Colts) with a hip issue and wasn’t able to return (he was replaced by old faithful Joe Flacco). Early reports Monday indicated the Colts were just taking major precautions with him on Sunday.

But other teams have more to worry about. On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Davante Adams is reportedly requesting a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders. This comes after head coach Antonio Pierce liked an Instagram post that posited Adams had played his last game as a Raider.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star wide receiver Rashee Rice is undergoing tests for what is potentially a season-ending knee injury. Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday that full clarity on Rice’s injury may not come until later, but that he is likely out indefinitely.

Live20 updates

  • Davante Adams reportedly requests trade from Las Vegas

It started with an Instagram like.

Las Vegas Raiders All-Pro Davante Adams fielded questions Tuesday morning about his head coach Antonio Pierce appearing to publicly endorse that he be traded. Hours later, Adams told the Raiders that he prefers to be traded, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vincent Bonsignore, meanwhile, reported that the Raiders are “growing open to the idea” of trading Adams and are “reaching out to teams to gauge interest in the veteran wide receiver.”

This has all surfaced since Pierce’s digital response on Monday to a Sports Illustrated report shared on Instagram that Adams may have played his last snap with the Raiders.

  • CMC has had bilateral Achilles tendinitis “for some time”

Though the issue has been largely just in one leg, 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey has had bilateral Achilles tendinitis “for some time,” Kyle Shanahan revealed on Monday.

He’s still recovering and on injured reserve.

#49ers Kyle Shanahan says that Christian McCaffrey has had bilateral achilles tendinitis for some time, but that the issue has been primarily in one leg.

A good sign that he has not suffered another setback, but still something to watch for the next month or so.

  • The Haason Reddick situation isn’t getting resolved soon

Ian Rapoport dashes the dreams of Jets fans hoping the team can unload Haason Reddick back to Philly. Aside from the fact that Philly wouldn’t take him back even if the Jets paid them, it’s against the NFL rules.

The #Jets situation with Haason Reddick still has no resolution & some wondered if NYJ could trade him back to the #Eagles. Turns out, per NFL rules, not possible.

Teams can’t trade a player, then reacquire him via trade until 2 years elapse. Reddick won’t head back to Philly. pic.twitter.com/yHGE28zPNY

  • Doug Pederson’s failure to win and develop Trevor Lawrence could cost him his job

Nearly three years ago, it felt like a perfect fit. The Jacksonville Jaguars had a near-mutiny under head coach Urban Meyer, quarterback Trevor Lawrence looked like a mess, and the franchise was spiraling toward another double-digit loss season. In the expanse of Shad Khan’s ownership of the team, it felt like a rarefied opportunity with a generational quarterback was in jeopardy.

In response, Khan hired Doug Pederson.

Imagine Khan’s dismay Sunday, after watching his Jaguars lose a 24-20 agony game to a Houston Texans team that is following the precise trajectory that was charted by the Jaguars when Pederson got his hands onto the team. By Year 3 of his tenure? Jacksonville was supposed to be battling for AFC supremacy and Lawrence should have taken lengthy strides toward the league’s elite tier of quarterbacks. Instead, time in Jacksonville is a flat circle and the Jaguars are mired in Friedrich Nietzsche’s trench of eternal recurrence.

This is another way of saying the Jaguars are what they were … and may inevitably become what they have already been.

  • Why can’t the Commanders win the NFC East?

Every NFL season has its fair share of surprises where teams over or underperform based on the preconceptions that people had for them coming into the year. Through the quarter mark of the season, there hasn’t been a team that’s exceeded initial expectations more than the Washington Commanders, who sit at 3-1 and currently hold a one-game lead for first place in the NFC East.

That is just incredible, considering they were coming off of a season where they were bad enough to need a new coaching staff and quarterback — but they’re off to a roaring start. A week after they scored 38 points against the Bengals, the Commanders went to Arizona and absolutely lit up the Cardinals en route to a 42-14 beatdown on the road.

  • Commanders QB Jayden Daniels putting up Tom Brady-esque stats

Might want to keep an eye on this Jayden Daniels kid. Through his first four games he’s got a better completion percent than some guy named Tom Brady in his 2007 season. The Commanders may have gotten a real one in the 2024 NFL Draft, folks.

  • Anthony Richardson’s hip injury reportedly not so bad

Good news for Colts fans: the injury that took QB Anthony Richardson out of Sunday’s win against the Steelers doesn’t appear to be that bad. Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported that the Colts were acting with an abundance of caution when they ruled him out, but he appears to have avoided major injury.

Good news is Anthony Richardson suffered a hip pointer and isn’t expected to miss much, if any, game time, per sources.
