A blasé caller of a Washington, DC-area radio show reported the discovery of human remains in Maryland — and he left the hosts shocked and appalled when he revealed he hadn’t even reported the grisly find to police.
Elliot Segal, the primary host and DJ on “Elliot in the Morning,” started out his show on Nov. 21 with his usual talks about the news, sports, and a fixation on “opening a turf business.”
Things took a bizarre turn when one mystery caller, who claimed his name was Joseph but added that he “didn’t want to give [his] real name,” phoned the show and cheekily told them to take a “look” at his latest find.
Joseph said he sent an email to the show including the photos, and Segal and his crew were flabbergasted.
“Dude, you found a dead body?” Segal gasped as the unnervingly calm caller continued on with his tale.
Joseph said that he came across the body at a campsite near an old “tent city” in Maryland’s Frederick County 18 days prior to his call, which would’ve been on or around Nov. 3.
“This may sound sick, but I’ve always wanted to come upon something like that, and luckily, it was months old, so that was nice,” Joseph said.
“Tell me, Jesus Christ, tell me you called the police,” Segal practically pleaded.
“Probably today. I had a dream last night that I called ’em. So no, not yet–” the caller tried to explain.
“Dude, call the cops! Call the cops!” Segal implored.
Joseph, though, didn’t seem to care as he tried to convince Segal to see his side of the situation.
“I assume this guy died in the street, whether it was an overdose or froze to death,” Joseph said.
“Once you see the pictures, Elliot, you’ll understand why I believe it wasn’t important to [report the body] a month ago,” Joseph later added.
Segal repeatedly tried to encourage the caller to notify police immediately, but Joseph only vaguely promised to do it “soon.”
“Why do you think I have to do it right now?” Joseph groused.
“Why? Because there’s a dead body that you found!” Segal said.
After a long pause, Joseph assured “it’s gonna happen today” and even said he would have the police “pick [him] up” so he can lead them “out to the site.”
Later that same day, Frederick Police confirmed that investigators found a corpse in a wooded area near East Street and Carroll Creek Crossing, ABC 7 News reported.
Police told the outlet that the victim’s “[i]dentification and cause of death have not yet been confirmed.”
It’s unclear if the caller was the one who reported the discovery to police.
