A 10-year-old girl fell to her death from a building window in the New York City after she was apparently left at home alone, according to sources.
Police were called to 2157 Southern Boulevard in the East Tremont section of the Bronx around 8:45 p.m. Thursday on a report that a girl had fallen out of a building window.
The young girl may have been home alone when she took the tumble, and police said she had injuries indicating a fall from a high elevation including bruising on the feet, police sources told The Post on Sunday.
She was vomiting up blood when she was taken by private vehicle to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to law enforcement sources.
Sources also told CBS News that the girl and her mother had argued about using an iPad earlier that day.
The mother left around 4:30 p.m. for a doctor’s appointment.
When she returned home, she found the girl lying in the courtyard outside their building, the sources added.
Police are reviewing the surveillance video to try and determine if the child was supervised and whether she fell from a window or the roof.
On Sunday, a memorial with pink flowers, purple balloons and candles was set up outside the building where the little girl fell. her death.
One resident of the building for over 30 years said she called 911, unaware that her neighbor’s daughter was who she was calling for.
“My son called out to me and told me to call 911,” she told The Post on Sunday. “I called 911 and they kept asking me questions. I thought something happened to someone who got off the bus with him [her son]. I didn’t know it was my neighbor’s daughter upstairs.”
By the time she got downstairs, the family had gotten into a cab to take the girl to the hospital, she added.
“Her mother was very very nice. Decent mom. She lives above me. Those kids were kept very nice and clean,” she said. “I’m sorry for the mother. I feel for the mother.”
The neighbor added that the family was very private and the little girl was shy.
“The child was very quiet. I would tease her like, ‘Oh, you look so you,’” she recalled. “She was a sweetheart.”
The city medical examiner will determine the cause of the child’s death, police said.
No charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made in the case.
