The largest great white shark ever discovered in the Atlantic Ocean was spotted for the first time in months and is most likely heading toward Cape Cod and then the eastern coast of Canada, according to a group that researches the apex predators.
The 14-foot, 1,700-pound male shark named “Contender” was last spotted near the Outer Banks of North Carolina and is believed to be heading north towards the popular Massachusetts summer destination, according to OCEARCH’s shark tracker.
Contender’s GPS tracking device, attached to its fin, last pinged on Friday after the behemoth beast had disappeared into the ocean’s depths for several months since the Outer Banks sighting in April.
The Friday glimpse of the great white, however, was only a partial ping and not strong enough to generate an exact location, according to the conservation group.
Still, the shark experts have a good idea of where Contender is likely heading.
“White sharks in the western North Atlantic typically migrate north and spend the summer and early fall foraging in the waters of Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada,” a spokesperson for OCEARCH told the Sun.
“These two regions offer comfortable water temperatures and an abundant food supply, in particular abundant seals and large fish species.”
