A.J. Ewing’s glove quickly becoming difference-maker for Mets

A.J. Ewing looked just as smooth gliding to the center-field warning track and reaching back for the wall as he did running forward to make an all-or-nothing dive.

Two very different plays, two outs in Wednesday’s 4-2 win against the Reds to snap the Mets’ five-game losing streak headed into Thursday’s off day.

Though Ewing made his initial splash by tripling, stealing a base and walking three times in his MLB debut — and later added a home run in the same series — his glove has been his primary weapon since the Mets promoted him May 12.

“Continues to get comfortable there,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “The reads, the jumps, the routes. This is a player that is a pretty good defender, right? But it’s just good to see him get comfortable moving with counts, the communication with the right fielder and left fielder. Just taking charge.”
