Longtime public servant Jessica Tisch will serve as the NYPD’s next permanent commissioner, Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday.
Tisch, the city’s sanitation commissioner and an NYPD veteran, will start her new job Monday, the mayor said.
“We believe that they need a full time leader who is dedicated to speed that every minute of every day, keeping us safe,” he said.
“I need someone that is going to take the police department into the next century.”
The surprise appointment – made during a news conference focused on restoring budget cuts – will end months of uncertainty atop the NYPD after last permanent commissioner, Edward Caban, resigned shortly after federal agents raided his home in September.
She emerged as the frontrunner to take over the job, The Post reported last month.
Tom Donlon, a former FBI official who stepped in as interim commissioner following Caban’s resignation, quickly found himself mired in turmoil.
The feds raided his home in the search for decades-old documents and he had a high-profile public spat with newly installed NYPD Chief of Staff Tarik Sheppard during an NYC Marathon photo op.
Tisch, who previously had been eyed for the commissioner role, will be the NYPD second woman top boss.
