Alex Bregman has ‘ball in his court’ as his free agency drags on: Alex Cora

The Red Sox appear to be waiting on Alex Bregman.

Boston manager Alex Cora touched on the star third baseman’s free agency when speaking to the media on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Fest.

“You’ve got to ask him,” Cora said when asked about Bregman. “The ball is in his court … I like the player. We like the player. Let’s see what happens.”

Bregman, who turns 32 in March, has received interest from across baseball this winter.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that the Red Sox had handed Bregman an “aggressive” offer, but the three-time All-Star has yet to reach a decision.

An ESPN report suggested that Boston’s offer was similar to the six-year, $171.5 million deal the Tigers offered him a year ago.

While Boston is still interested, Bregman has also been tied to the Yankees, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Blue Jays, and Tigers, among other teams.

Last season, Bregman hit .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs during his first — and maybe only — year in Boston

Last offseason, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox.

The deal had opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, which he exercised to test the open market for the second straight winter.

Bregman is expected to get a deal somewhere in the range of $150-175 million.

Boston has had a busy offseason even without a resolution on the Bregman front, having traded for starter Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras.

Blue Jays free agent infielder Bo Bichette was floated as a potential Bregman replacement for the Red Sox last month.
