Baker Mayfield didn’t return to the Buccaneers’ blowout loss to the Rams on Sunday night after suffering a sprained left shoulder at the end of the first half.
The Bucs quarterback was heaving the ball down the field as the clock wound down, and as he tripped himself up and fell to the ground, he grabbed at his left shoulder in serious discomfort.
Members of the Tampa Bay medical staff came out to check on Mayfield and he had been down for a significant period of time when the play ended.
Mayfield was initially ruled doubtful to return to the game by the team and was later downgraded to out for the remainder of the Week 12 matchup.
Coach Todd Bowles told reporters after the game that Mayfield suffered a sprain.
Mayfield had already been dealing with discomfort in his left shoulder when he had checked in the second quarter following a hard hit and later in that same drive, he looked uncomfortable following a touchdown pass to Tez Johnson.
Things came to a head on that final play of the half.
Mayfield had completed just nine passes for 41 yards and a touchdown before he was hurt.
He had two interceptions and was sacked twice on Sunday as well and the Buccaneers headed into halftime down 31-7.
They went on to lose 34-7.
Mayfield was later spotted with his left shoulder in a sling following the injury.
Mayfield did undergo X-rays on Sunday night and they came back negative.
He will have an MRI on his left shoulder on Thursday, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported.
