Boneheaded sports moments defy explanation — even when they shouldn’t

State of the art: Sure, Packers CB Carrington Valentine celebrated himself as if it were Valentine’s Day and he’d just received flowers and a box of chocolates, card attached: “To C.V., with all my love, C.V.”

Why not? He’d just intercepted a long Caleb Williams pass at his team’s 12-yard line. In a playoff game! Tackled immediately by the Bears, he then performed an extended display of self-affection. It was, after all, all about him.

However …

Williams, from Green Bay’s 40, threw the pass on fourth down. Had Valentine simply let the ball drop or batted it to the ground — nothing easier than not catching a ball — the Packers would have had the ball, first-and-10 (for the “line to gain” or to “move the chains/sticks”) at their 40 instead of their 12.
