California cities ranked worst for single mothers raising children

California’s punishing cost of living is hitting single moms especially hard — with five metro areas in the state ranking among the worst places in America for women raising children on their own.

Fresno, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose, Los Angeles and Riverside-San Bernardino all sat at the bottom of a list from Single Mothers Grants examining where solo moms face the biggest financial and quality-of-life squeeze.

California itself was ranked among the three toughest states for single mothers, alongside Nevada and New Mexico. 

The study examined the financial minefield facing parents trying to support a family on one income, weighing housing and childcare costs along with transportation, groceries, unemployment, crime, health care access and education.

For California moms, two of the biggest budget-busters are rent and childcare costs. 

The state’s median home value is roughly $764,000, while typical rents can range from about $2,180 to more than $2,700 a month depending on the property, according to Zillow.

Then comes the daycare bill.

Full-time childcare in California can typically run from roughly $1,200 to more than $2,800 per month, with costs varying dramatically depending on a child’s age, location and type of care, according to figures cited from childcare marketplace Wonderschool.

For a single mother footing the bills without a second paycheck, those expenses can quickly turn California into a financial pressure cooker.

Researchers built their rankings using government and other data on nine broad categories — rent burden, childcare prices, childcare availability, transportation costs, food costs, unemployment, crime, healthcare access and education.

The housing calculations incorporated 2024 Census data on rents and the incomes of female householders without a spouse who have children. Researchers also used Child Care Aware data, FBI crime statistics, USDA food costs and federal health care and transportation data.

California’s showing stands in stark contrast to parts of the Midwest and Northeast.

Worcester, Mass., Minneapolis and Omaha emerged as the study’s strongest metro areas for single mothers, benefiting from combinations of more manageable housing expenses, schools, childcare availability and employment conditions.

At the state level, Vermont and the Dakotas were among those that performed particularly well.

The study cautioned that bargain-basement prices alone don’t necessarily make a city easy on single moms. Some cheaper areas were dragged down by weaker schools, safety concerns or limited access to services.

Researchers said single mothers considering a move should examine individual neighborhoods rather than relying solely on citywide statistics and factor in things like family support.

Having grandparents, siblings or trusted friends nearby to handle a school pickup or childcare emergency could make an expensive community more workable than a cheaper city where a parent is completely on her own.
