Crane scares off alligator in epic showdown: ‘Most Florida video ever’

A crane stood its ground and forced an alligator to retreat back into a Florida pond in a wild, caught-on-camera confrontation.

The Sunshine State standoff began when a sandhill crane slowly encroached on a gator was basking in the sun behind a residential home, according to the viral video.

The crane, undeterred by the gator’s toothy bellow, spread its wings until they were nearly beak-to-snout.

The gator sat still but then crept backwards until it was submerged in the pond.

“Oh my God. That bird is backing him up!” the man who recorded the video gasped.

“Oh my God. I’ve never seen anything like that. Why?” his partner added.

When the gator finally slunk back into the murky water, the crane dipped one foot on the shoreline before jumping backwards.

The gator didn’t emerge from the water again.

Viewers speculated that the crane was “protecting her colts” from the fearsome reptile and smartly avoided the water.

“There’s a reason why gators don’t mess with sandhill cranes…” one woman commented.

“Well, all right, sandhill crane, I was not familiar with your game,” another added.

“This is the most Florida video I’ve ever seen,” one user concluded.

Alligators typically prefer prey that they can catch easily, ranging from turtles to various bird species.

Sandhill cranes, though, are highly territorial, specifically during the spring breeding season, and are quick to ward off any would-be threat — including alligators.

The crane in the video displayed its species’ hallmark threats, including the aptly named “threat walk” and the “flag display,” as detailed in the International Crane Foundation’s Field Guide to Crane Behavior.
