Disturbing voter trend emerges in Nithya Raman’s own backyard amid LA election fury

Nithya Raman’s dramatic surge into the Los Angeles mayoral runoff comes with warning sign inside the election map.

While Raman ultimately overtook Spencer Pratt citywide to secure a spot in November’s runoff against Mayor Karen Bass, large portions of the City Council district she currently represents appeared to favor other candidates.

A neighborhood-by-neighborhood breakdown in the LA Times of the June primaries shows Council District 4 split between Raman, Bass and Pratt, with Pratt dominating much of the San Fernando Valley, and Bass also finding support in several neighborhoods represented by the councilwoman.

Raman’s strongest support appeared concentrated in East Hollywood, Los Feliz and surrounding progressive neighborhoods.

The map comes just weeks after residents across District 4 told The California Post they felt increasingly disconnected from the council office and frustrated by what they described as a lack of responsiveness from Raman and her staff.

Among them was longtime district resident and animal advocate Shira Scott Astrof, who lives near Runyon Canyon.

“I was shocked and horrified at how she treated people,” Astrof previously told The California Post.

Astrof said her frustrations began while trying to help residents in her building navigate affordable housing concerns and fears about potentially losing their housing.

Because tenant protections had become one of Raman’s signature issues, Astrof expected the council office would step in.

“I either got wrong information, rude information, but most of the time they just wouldn’t answer our emails or return calls,” Astrof said. “She ran on her biggest thing being that she protects renters.”

The apparent weakness in parts of Raman’s own district also surfaced publicly during a mayoral debate in Sherman Oaks last month.

Nearly 200 residents packed the Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center as Bass and Raman clashed over homelessness, public safety and encampments.

Raman was booed several times while defending her opposition to expanding the city’s anti-camping ordinance near additional schools and parks.

At one point Bass directly linked Raman to conditions many residents say have worsened across Los Angeles.

“It is completely unacceptable for there to be encampments near schools,” Bass told the audience.

The election map appears to show those political fault lines extending beyond a single debate stage.

Pratt found significant support across much of the Valley portion of District 4.

Bass also remained competitive in several neighborhoods represented by Raman. The councilwoman’s strongest support is concentrated in neighborhoods on the eastern side of the district.
