A producer behind “Donnie Darko,” the cult classic that helped make Jake Gyllenhaal a household name, claims he was screwed out of millions in promised royalties, according to a new lawsuit.

Adam Fields, 60, the veteran producer behind hits including “The Breakfast Club” and “Vision Quest,” has sued Shamrock Capital Advisors in Los Angeles, claiming he’s been denied his share of “Donnie Darko” profits since the cult classic premiered 25 years ago.

Fields signed a deal in 2000 entitling him to 4% of the film’s net profits plus a bonus for helping put together the movie, according to the lawsuit.

“Donnie Darko starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and then-newcomer Seth Rogen.

The $4.5 million film, about a troubled teenager haunted by a menacing figure in a rabbit costume, premiered at Sundance in 2001 and became a cult classic.

“The film continues to be exhibited and commercially exploited on multiple platforms, including video on demand services, streaming platforms, physical media sales, and theatrical re-releases,” the lawsuit states.

Profit statements have “consistently reported” no profits available for distribution, according to Fields.

One statement covering the period through Dec. 31, 2025, reported more than $6.4 million in gross earnings but, after distribution fees and other deductions, showed net profits at negative $6 million, according to the suit.

Fields questions how a movie made in 28 days for only $4.5 million has failed to turn a profit despite more than two decades of commercial exploitation.

He also claims a sequel is in development, and that he has been shut out despite an agreement entitling him to participate, costing him “valuable professional opportunities and compensation.”

Fields is seeking damages, access to the film’s financial records and involvement in any “Donnie Darko” sequel.
