Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed mocked President Donald Trump and his opponent in a combative victory speech Tuesday night in Michigan.
El-Sayed, who defeated Republican Mike Rogers, said his opponents “went all-in on one of the ugliest campaigns we’ve seen in our lifetimes.”
“They might have been pointing at my name and my faith, but we all know my name and my faith aren’t the reason you can’t afford your gas or afford your groceries,” El-Sayed said.

He said Trump’s comments about him became “uglier and coarser” and that “to all the parents who struggle to explain why the president openly mocked someone for their name or how they pray, let them know tomorrow that the bad guys lost.”
“They want an America that is too small for some of us, but we know America is big enough for all of us,” he continued.
He also mockingly spoke of Vice President JD Vance, a foe he has combatted with frequently in recent months, saying, “There is this delicious irony in the fact that you’re constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January. So you know what that means. Wolverine one. Buckeye zero.”

He then shifted his focus to Israel, saying Americans want their money spent in the U.S.

“We don’t want our money spent on apartheid or genocidal war,” he added.
El-Sayed also had mocking words for his opponent, telling Rogers to “enjoy your retirement.”
“May we never have to see the likes of you in the state again,” he added.

Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed outran alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, concerns about his rhetoric over Israel and Jewish voters in Michigan and criticism from fellow Democrats for his ties to controversial political streamer Hasan Piker.

Rogers failed to outrun the political headwinds that have buffeted Republicans this cycle, including affordability issues, President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada launched in the thick of the midterms and the Iran war, despite his attempts to distance himself from the latter issues.

El-Sayed’s victory serves as a major blow to the GOP’s push against the progressive lean in Democratic politics, where for much of the cycle after his shock win over Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., Republicans painted him as the face of socialism and communism in their messaging.
