Evan Roberts couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw Mets fans give Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams a standing ovation after his near no-hitter Wednesday at Citi Field.
“It’s almost been 24 hours, and I’ve gotta get over it, but I’m still angry at my fellow Met fans. That’s right. I’m angry at my fellow Met fans,” the WFAN host said on “Evan & Tiki” on Thursday.
“When Gavin Williams, the pitcher for the Guardians, gave up the home run to (Juan) Soto, stayed in the game, issued a walk, got an out, and was pulled, okay, with two outs in the ninth, he got a standing ovation from Met fans.”
When co-host Tiki Barber asked, “What’s wrong with that?” Roberts replied: “What’s right with that, Tik?”
Williams did not surrender a hit through 8 1/3 innings until Soto hit his solo shot in the bottom of the ninth, which provided the Mets’ only run in the 4-1 defeat, their eighth in nine games.
Roberts didn’t see the need for any niceties.

“This is nothing personal to Gavin Williams or anybody else,” Roberts said. “But if you’re in that building and you’re a Met fan, you’re appreciating his greatness? Since when do we do that? Since when do we say, “Oh, you know, that Derek Jeter, he kicked the Mets’ ass. Let’s give him a standing ovation.’ What kind of losers are we that we’re cheering the opponent?”
Roberts added that he was sitting in the last row of Section 122 to witness it all unfold.
“I got to see the rise of asses and people as Gavin was coming out of the game, and I’m so annoyed. I turn to my wife to complain about it, and what is my wife doing?”
“She’s standing and cheering,” Barber replied, to which Roberts exclaimed, “Yes!”

“Of course,” Barber said, “because she appreciates it.”
The Mets, now 2 ½ games back of the Phillies for first place in the NL East, begin a three-game set with the Brewers in Milwaukee before returning to Queens for a six-game homestand against the Braves and Mariners.
