An employee at the Fairmont Hotel was arrested for carrying a loaded gun to work while Vice President Kamala Harris was staying at the iconic location.

San Francisco police confirmed that the loaded weapon was discovered Tuesday morning by magnetometers installed by the Secret Service, according to ABC News.

The individual, who had recently moved from Texas, claimed to be accustomed to carrying a concealed firearm, a right permitted in the Lone Star State but heavily restricted in California’s labyrinth of anti-Second Amendment regulations.

In California, concealed carry is legal only with a Concealed Carry Weapons License (CCWL), which is issued by the county sheriff’s office or local police station.

The state operates under a “shall issue” policy since the Supreme Court’s ruling on NYSRPA v. Bruen on June 23, 2022, meaning licenses must be issued when conditions are met.

The open carry of loaded firearms is generally prohibited throughout California, except in specific circumstances such as within counties with populations under 200,000, where a special license can be issued.

The California Penal Code Section 25850 PC defines penalties for carrying a loaded firearm in public without a permit, classifying it as a misdemeanor or felony depending on prior offenses and the intent to commit a crime.

After further investigation, authorities uncovered that the employee had an active arrest warrant from Tarrant County, Texas, for undisclosed charges.

Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff departed the Fairmont Tuesday afternoon without incident.

The Secret Service later stated that Harris was never in direct danger and that the firearm was not intended to harm her, per ABC News.

Harris, whose approval ratings have plummeted following her unsuccessful presidential campaign, was in the Bay Area for unclear reasons.
