GILBERT, AZ — According to sources, a family of church visitors left services almost immediately on Sunday after finding out that pastor said “worsh” instead of “wash.”
While it’s not unusual for people to leave church early, attendees at St. Paul’s Lutheran were surprised to see an entire family get up during the sermon’s introduction.
“Christ wants to worsh your sins away,” Pastor Jim Clavet said, much to the dismay of the visiting family. “Let Him worsh you. Be worshed in the waters of baptism and be risen to new life, worshed by the blood of Christ.”
“What is this, Western Pennsylvania?” the mother said, according to witnesses. “Frank, we’re leaving!”
According to sources, the unidentified family dropped a paper in a tithing box at the back of the building as they left. The note, discovered later by the church treasurer, said, “Try talking normal.”
Pastor Clavet has long dealt with prejudice as a result of his quaint midwestern speech, but it has never before interfered with his witness to the gospel. “I’m not Daniel Day-Lewis. I don’t know how to talk any different,” he said. “But by the grace of God, maybe someday I’ll say worsh. I mean worsh. Worsh. Dang it.”
At publishing time, a google review for the church posted by anonymous user FaithFrancis read, “Nice looking place, but the preacher says ‘worsh’. Shudder.”
