Family of teen killed after underground Cal State Fullerton frat event takes aim at ‘fake’ fraternities

The grieving family of a Cal State Fullerton freshman who was dumped at a local hospital where he later died is prepared to do everything it can to make sure the life of another student doesn’t end the same way.

Anthony Joseph Blas –– an 18-year-old college freshman –– tragically died after he attended an off-campus fraternity event and was dropped off unresponsive at St. Jude Medical Center on September 13.

Investigators believe his death was alcohol-related, stemming from the event at the underground fraternity.

“Our hope is to work with lawmakers… to push for stronger awareness and education for incoming college students, especially freshmen, about fake, underground, and unrecognized fraternities and organizations; how students can identify them; and the potential dangerous of becoming involved with an organization that is not what it claims to be,” the family wrote in a GoFundMe on Friday.

“We believe students deserve to have this information before they arrive on campus and before they are approached or recruited,” they added.

“We want incoming students and their families to know what questions to ask, how to verify whether an organization is legitimately recognized, what warning signs to look for, and where they can turn for help if something doesn’t feel right,”

Blas’ family also said they hope to use their son’s name to ask for stronger education and awareness so that others won’t ever have to go through the same experience.

Blas, who only recently turned 18, was excited about his future and about the “dreams he was just beginning to build for himself,” his family said.

He is believed to have attended a fraternity event hosted by Delta Chi, a group that lost its recognition over hazing allegations in 2021.

The frat was banned from the university over hazing and “use, possession, manufacture, or distribution” of illegal drugs and alcohol, according to CSUF’s Student Organization Conduct Status.

“Following the closure of the chapter, Delta Chi has proactively worked with university officials to make students aware that no active Delta Chi chapter exists at California State University, Fullerton,” the fraternity’s national office said to the OC Register.

While it has not been officially confirmed that Delta Chi was involved, the fraternity is located at the intersection where Blas attended an event.

Blas’s family demanded for a “complete and transparent investigation” and expressed concerns that “hazing may have played a role.”

The family also called for answers as to why 911 was not called when Anthony was found unresponsive, and who was with him in the hours before his death.

The GoFundMe set up by Blas’s family has currently raised over $1,800 of its $10,000 goal.

This incident also comes as another Southern California university is being rocked with a major controversy.

Four rapes have been recorded in a span of just three weeks this month at Cal State San Marcos, leaving female students scared for their safety and arming themselves as they walk through campus.
