Fernando Tatis Jr. makes insane MLB history with dominant performance vs Mets

Fernando Tatis Jr. is back.

The San Diego Padres star powered his team to a 5-2 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night in one of the most dominant performances at Citi Field. On the first pitch of the game, Tatis hit a 452-foot blast to left field. It marked the 18th leadoff home run of his career.

In the second inning, the two-time Platinum Glover robbed Francisco Lindor of a grand slam after he made a leaping catch at the right field wall.

In the top of the fifth, Tatis unloaded another home run to cap an otherworldly performance.

According to OptaSTATS, Tatis became the first MLB player to hit multiple homers and rob a grand slam in the same game since Seattle Mariners outfielder Mike Cameron did so during a four-homer performance in 2002.

Entering Wednesday’s series finale against the Mets, Tatis was batting .280 with 15 home runs, 60 RBIs and a .785 OPS on the season. His stat line is even more impressive given it took him 240 plate appearances to hit his first home run of the season after a brutal offensive slump to start the year.

The grand slam robbery went viral on social media, and Tatis himself sent a message on X. The Padres star posted a GIF of Maximus from “Gladiator.” The character raised his hands and famously said, “Are you not entertained?”

Tatis received high praise from manager Craig Stammen for his dominance on both sides of the ball. Had the right fielder not prevented Lindor’s grand slam, Padres pitcher Robbie Ray’s start would have unfurled.

Thanks to Tatis, Ray had his best start as a Padre, tossing six innings of one-run baseball with four strikeouts.

“It’s up there as one of the most impactful [games] he’s had as a Padre, for sure,” Stammen said of Tatis’ performance Tuesday. “You look at how many runs he created and then how many runs he took away. That’s a pretty big number. They talk about plus-minus in the NBA and hockey. That was a big plus-minus game for Tatis tonight.”
