Former New York Mets pitcher Craig Kimbrel’s younger brother has been killed in a motorcycle crash in Alabama.
Matt Kimbrel, 36, died in a hospital after he smashed at high speed into a dump truck that was exiting Highway 432 in Huntsville, Alabama, at around 8 a.m. Saturday, WCTV reported.
The pitcher’s brother couldn’t slow down in time and slammed into the back of the truck, officials said.
An investigation is continuing into the crash that killed the younger brother, who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and played in the minor leagues.
However, no criminal charges are expected to be filed, according to reports.
He was killed a month after his brother Craig, 38, signed with the Kansas City Royals, the 12th MLB team he’s played for in his professional career.
Craig Kimbrel signed with the Mets on a minor league deal in January before being designated for assignment in May. The veteran reliever appeared in 14 games for the Mets.
Craig was drafted by the Braves in the 33rd round in 2007. He was called up by the team in 2010.
By 2011, he made the team’s roster and won Rookie of the Year after breaking the club’s rookie records for the most amount saves in a season. He played with the Braves until 2015, when he was traded to Padres.
The brother also leaves behind his wife-to-be, Genevieve, whom he proposed to in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
“My fiancé passed away, and right now I truly don’t have the words,” she wrote online Saturday, just hours after the fatal collision.
“I know there are people who love us and will have questions, but I’m asking for a little time and space before I’m ready to talk about what happened or say anything more.
“Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we try to process this unimaginable loss. I’ll share more when I’m ready.”
