Barbara Pierce Bush, daughter of former Republican President George W. Bush, is supporting Kamala Harris for president and helped campaign for her in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend. I’m hopeful they’ll move our country forward and protect women’s rights,” Pierce Bush told People Magazine.
Bush’s paternal grandfather, George H.W. Bush, was also president from 1989 to 1993.
Despite hailing from a Republican family, Pierce Bush, 42, who is one of the 43rd president’s twin daughters, says she identifies as an independent and doesn’t fully align with either major party.
Pierce Bush, a mother of two, also spoke out in support of Planned Parenthood during a 2017 fundraiser.
“I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood not only because women, regardless of where they are from, deserve to live dignified, healthy lives, [but] … because it’s a really good investment,” she said at the time, per The Texas Tribune.
“We know that when women are healthy, their families and their children are healthier, too.”
Her mother, former first lady Laura Bush, has similarly bucked Republican Party orthodoxy on abortion and same-sex marriage. Both George W. and Laura Bush has refrained from endorsing in the 2024 cycle.
The late first lady Barbara Bush, after whom Pierce Bush is named, had also split from the GOP stance on abortion, as have all Republican first ladies since Roe v. Wade, and had a longstanding dislike of GOP nominee Donald Trump.
George W. Bush’s brother, former Florida GOP Gov. Jeb Bush famously clashed hard with the real estate mogul during the 2016 Republican primary.
However, Jeb’s eldest son, George P. Bush, had spoken favorably of Trump during his unsuccessful bid for Texas attorney general in 2022.
The former Florida governor’s nephew, TV and radio host Billy Bush, was the man recorded talking to Trump in the infamous “Access Hollywood” video with Trump that emerged as an October surprise in 2016. The following year, Bush penned an op-ed criticizing Trump over his statements on women.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has endorsed Harris, and his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has repeatedly stumped for Harris on the campaign trail.
