House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) endorsed embattled Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) for re-election as the fellow New York Democrat faces a tough primary challenge from the left.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani backs fellow lefty Brad Lander, the former city comptroller challenging Goldman — showing growing division between the far-left and mainstream Dems.
Goldman, a two-term congressman who officially kicked off his re-election campaign Tuesday, is vulnerable because of his support of Israel, while many primary-voting Dems have turned on the Jewish state over the war in Gaza.
In a statement, Jeffries and other House Democratic leaders said Goldman is no slouch when it comes to standing up to President Trump, citing his role as House counsel during the first impeachment proceedings against Trump during his first term.
“Dan’s successful experience during the first impeachment of Donald Trump has proven invaluable in pushing back against the extremist agenda of House Republicans,” said the joint statement from Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and caucus chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.).
“His unique investigative ability will be critical to the work of the House Judiciary Committee in the next Congress,” the statement said of Goldman, a former federal prosecutor.
The liberal 10th Congressional District encompasses Lower Manhattan and portions of Brooklyn.
Jeffries did not back Democratic socialist Mamdani for mayor until the final weeks of the general election, and his endorsement was a tepid one.
