Caleb Williams scrambled to produce a miracle touchdown to end regulation — and NBC later had to scramble its audio during a seemingly vulgar postgame interview, creating a confusing on-air moment.
Moments after sending the Rams to the NFC championship game with a 42-yard field goal in overtime Sunday, kicker Harrison Mevis joined quarterback Matthew Stafford for an interview with NBC’s Melissa Stark.
As Stark asked Mevis, nicknamed the “Thiccer Kicker” due to his larger frame, about battling the cold and snow on his field goal, his response left viewers confused.
“I mean…,” Mevis began before the audio scrambled, sounding more like a phone call breaking up than an actual answer.
“Shoot, that’s why we do it,” Mevis said as the audio stabilized.
Social media immediately blew up with confusion on what had transpired, with one account quipping that Mevis was speaking Russian.
Another X user attempted to transcribe Mevis’ answer.
“I mean adkopskopkoerpgjkvoperjg pervjfopdkdfopaskdasopseweffdfasdjwopfa jiopasdkopa….” the X user posted in jest.
As it turned out, Mevis appeared to say “s–t” to begin the interview, prompting the network to briefly scramble the audio on account of the obscenity, per CJ Fogler on Bluesky.
He then appeared to switch to “shoot” later in his response.
Technical difficulties aside, Mevis enjoyed the biggest kick of his career, leading LA to a 20-17 win, setting up an NFC championship matchup against the Seahawks, who obliterated the 49ers on Saturday.
Mevis, 23, began the year on the Jets’ roster, converting three of four preseason field goals before being waived in mid-September after a brief run on the practice squad.
The former Missouri Tigers kicker signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in May 2024, but he had yet to appear in a regular season game before joining the Rams last November.
He also spent time with the United Football League’s Birmingham Stallions last season, converting 20 of his 21 field goal attempts.
In nine games with the Rams, the 6-foot, 245-pound kicker converted 12 of 13 field goals.
