It’s a case for cops to crack – but are still scrambling to solve it.
More than 500 eggs were stolen in an early-morning heist in Seattle – as bird flu continues to drive up prices of the beloved breakfast staple.
Surveillance footage of the Luna Park Cafe showed two suspects loading hundreds of dollars of eggs and other breakfast items from the restaurant’s refrigerated shed into a white van, according to ABC 7.
The business reported the robbery around 4:42 a.m. with someone describing “rotten activity [was] seen live on security cameras,” according to FOX 13.
The thieves stole a total of about $780 worth of food, including bacon, ground beef, blueberries and “liquid egg products” according to the Seattle Police Department.
They also stole 540 eggs – which alone put a crack in the restaurant’s budget as they were worth about $387.
“They knew what they were after,” Heong Park, owner of Luna Park Cafe, told KIRO 7. Park added that the thieves did not even touch the alcohol that was stored in the fridge.
Park had immediately scrambled to the cafe after receiving the news from his landlord that the cafe was getting robbed. He saw the suspects in the act when he arrived, stopping them from taking more food but they unfortunately got away.
The Seattle Police Department is still investigating the case and has been unable to identify and catch the suspects egg-handed.
“It’s scary and now we are worried that they are going to come back,” Park told FOX 13.
Eggs have become a hot commodity since egg-flation started to crack open and hit consumer prices hard.
The bird flu outbreak has caused an egg shortage, increasing egg prices egg-sponentially. It has created a hardship on many small businesses struggling to make ends meet.
“People don’t want to pay more for eggs, but I will have to raise prices soon,” Chuqui, a cook at the Mexican Food and Breakfast food cart at West 77th Street and Broadway, told The Post.
And the high demand for eggs is what makes them an egg-cellent target for thieves.
“It’s a rough time for everybody who owns a restaurant, with higher minimum wage, higher food cost. Everything impacts us, we are just a small business,” Park said to FOX 13.
