A Democrat congresswoman has experienced what she called a “heartbreaking change” in her personal life.

As People Magazine reported, Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI) shared in a personal letter on X on Friday that her husband of 20 years, Jesse Holcomb, had “suddenly left” their family home earlier this year and had filed for divorce.

She did not give a reason for her husband’s decision.

“Dear Neighbors, I want to share something personal,” Scholten wrote. “Earlier this year, our family went through a heartbreaking change when my husband of 20 years suddenly left our family home and then filed for divorce.”

“With the help of incredible family and friends, and through my unshakable, foundational faith in God, I have been raising my boys with strength, love, and stability,” she added. “We have been overcoming every day.”

Scholten then assured her constituents that, despite her “personal hardship,” she is still performing her job effectively.

“Despite this personal hardship, I have continued to show up for you in every way too,’ Scholten wrote. “I’ve passed legislation, brought dollars back to the district, and served my constituents – and I will continue doing just that.

“I raised my hand to do this job because I wanted more people who have never been heard to have a voice,” she continued. “As a woman, a mother, a social worker, and a public interest lawyer, I carry stories with me that are not often told in the halls of power.”

“Nothing in my current situation changes that. In fact, it deepens it.”

The Daily Mail reports that Holcomb is a journalism professor at Calvin University. He has not responded to the letter at this time.

Interestingly, Scholten is the third Michigan Democrat in recent years to experience the pain of divorce.

As the Mail notes, Rep. Haley Stevens separated from her husband in 2022 after a year of marriage.

In 2023, then-Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin divorced her husband, the year before she was elected to the US Senate.
