Jalen Hurts’ “unique” injury has been revealed — and it could be serious.
The Eagles announced on Thursday that Hurts is dealing with a blood clot in his calf that will sideline him at least for Sunday’s game against the Panthers.
The team had been aware of the injury after it was suffered in a matchup against the Rams on Oct. 4.
However, the team said that “on Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot.”
The Eagles are 2-3 and coming off three straight losses, including a heartbreaking 19-17 loss to the Jaguars in London on Sunday on a last-second field goal.
Philadelphia will not turn to Tanner McKee as the starter. McKee, a third-year player out of Stanford, has played in six games throughout his first two seasons -— completing 54-of-88 passes for 597 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
Most of that action came in meaningless season finales the past two years against the Giants and Commanders.
Cole Payton, a fifth-round rookie out of North Dakota State, is currently the backup. However, NFL Network reported the Eagles could bring back veteran Andy Dalton after releasing him last week.
Hurts’ injury is the latest drama around the team. Perennial Pro Bowl tackle Lane Johnson retired last week, the team then traded away lineman Cam Jurgens and have also been dealing with a rash of injuries to skilled position players with Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith both missing time.
The Eagles went through pains to explain in their statement why Hurts was initially able to play through the injury.
“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th,” the team said. “This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report.
“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.
“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter.”
Hurts was listed as a full participant in last Friday’s practice before the Jaguars game, but a calf injury was noted in the report.
“It was a very unique experience, to say the least,” Hurts said Wednesday of the injury. “I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot, but got nicked up in the Rams game.”
