Jets kicking carousel takes wild twist after Harrison Butker’s Chiefs injury

No sooner had the Jets finished singing Spencer Shrader’s praises than he was gone from their roster.

The kicker carousel — which will bring the Jets to their fourth kicker in the last four games come Sunday — took its wildest spin yet Thursday when the Chiefs signed Shrader off of the Jets practice squad in news that became public at 4:32 p.m.

About 25 minutes earlier, special teams coordinator Brant Boyer spoke about how Shrader made both of his field-goal attempts in his Jets’ debut as a game-day roster elevation.

“Kid’s got a lot of talent,” Boyer said. “I think he handled it well, doing what we asked him to do and syncing up with those guys and doing a good job in the game.”

The Jets offered Shrader a spot on their 53-man roster to fend off the Chiefs’ interest, as first reported by ESPN and confirmed by The Post, but Shrader instead chose to join the undefeated two-time defending Super Bowl champions as a fill-in for the injured Harrison Butker.

So, the Jets will turn to another practice-squad elevation: Anders Carlson, who went 5-for-5 on field goals for the 49ers earlier this season.

Carlson was a sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023 but was cut after one shaky season.

The Jets put formerly reliable veteran Greg Zuerlein on injured reserve after he converted just 9-of-15 field goals through eight games and pivoted to Riley Patterson.

Patterson made 3 of 3 PATs but still was cut last week to make way for Carlson as competition for Shrader.

“We are just trying to find the best guy,” Boyer said. “That is where it all comes down to.”
