Knicks watch party horror as family dog is shot by LA cops — as harrowing video emerges

A family’s celebration of the New York Knicks’ NBA championship ended in heartbreak Saturday night when police shot and killed a family’s beloved dog after responding to reports of a screaming woman.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. at a condo complex in Canoga Park, where officers were called to check on a woman who was heard screaming, ABC7 reported.

Jameson, a 2-year-old golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle mix, was celebrating with the family before the shooting. A photo taken moments before he was killed showed the dog wearing a New York Knicks shirt.

Police said the dog rushed toward officers when they arrived at the building. Officers then opened fire, killing Jameson.

According to an official news release from the Los Angeles Police Department, officers from the Topanga Patrol Division responded to a radio call about a “screaming woman” inside an apartment.

Officers state that the large dog was with its owner when they asked her to secure it. She briefly closed the door, then reopened it, allowing Jameson to exit the apartment. The dog then reportedly charged at an officer, resulting in the shooting.

Cellphone video captured the emotional aftermath.

“Oh my God! Oh my God,” a woman cried. “I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening.”

Family members said they were celebrating the Knicks’ championship win when the evening took a tragic turn.

“We were just so happy. We were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks. We were f—king celebrating the Knicks,” the woman screamed in footage from the scene.

The 911 call that brought officers to the complex stemmed from concerns that someone inside the building was in distress.

Raymon Alvarez, who lives across the street, told ABC7 he heard the screams while heading out for a walk.

“The screaming I heard was like, ‘Ah! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ Like just, pure screaming,” Alvarez said.

When he returned home, Alvarez said he heard gunfire.

“I didn’t think they were gunshots at first because this area is not really known for any sort of gun violence,” Alvarez said.

The dog’s owner’s son told ABC7 off-camera that his mother was celebrating the Knicks’ championship with family and said Jameson was energetic but in no way violent.

“He’s such a good dog!” the woman can be heard screaming in the video following the shooting.

The neighbor who called 911 also spoke to the outlet off-camera, saying they now feel guilty about making the call but sincerely believed their neighbor was in trouble and needed help.

Police have said the shooting remains under investigation.
