Lamar Jackson’s season may be over.
Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said after Sunday’s loss to the Bills that the two-time NFL MVP will undergo surgery on his right thumb and be placed on injured reserve, which means Jackson will miss a minimum of four games.
Asked if the surgery will end Jackson’s season, Minter said. “Potentially.” We’ll see where it’s at.”
Jackson, 29, had just returned after a three-game absence due to a high-ankle sprain when he injured his thumb on his first play in Orchard Park.
Bills outside linebacker Greg Rousseau hit Jackson’s hand as the quarterback attempted a pass. Jackson left the game and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the afternoon.
Backup quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley also left Sunday’s 36-10 loss with a toe injury, which forced undrafted UConn rookie Joe Fagnano into action.
Fangano went 10-for-21 with 91 yards, an interception and a lost fumble against the Bills. He also appeared to be banged-up after taking some big hits, but said after the game he’d be fine.
The Ravens were 3-1 over their first four games with Jackson under center (they also won their first game without Jackson, an overtime win over the Falcons in Week 5.) Jackson completed 70.8 percent of his passes for 967 yards and six touchdowns against one interception in those four games, adding 144 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown.
The Ravens fell to 4-4 and are in last place in the AFC North. They’ll have to sort their quarterback situation in a hurry as they play the AFC South-leading Jaguars (5-2) on Thursday in Baltimore.
They’ll then have 10 days before they return to action against the Chargers on “Monday Night Football” in Week 10.
