Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump has pulled her name out of contention to serve as the next governor of Florida.

The incoming president’s decision to tap Senator Marco Rubio as his Secretary of State means that Florida will need a new Senator.

Unlike in other states, Florida law stipulates that this vacancy must be filled by an individual appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis.

This opening had let to speculation that Lara Trump, who is married to Donald Trump’s second son Eric and recently served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, could be chosen as his replacement.

Yet in a post on the X platform on Saturday, Lara said she would be removing her name from consideration and teased a “big announcement” that she will make next month:

After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate.

I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida. I have read so many of your kind messages and I cannot thank you enough.

I do have a big announcement that I’m excited to share in January, so, stay tuned.

I remain incredibly passionate about public service and look forward to serving our country again sometime in the future. In the meantime, I wish Governor DeSantis the best of luck with this appointment.

It is currently unclear what changed for Lara Trump, after she previously expressed an interest in filling  the vacancy.

“It is something I would seriously consider,” she said in a recent interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like.”

DeSantis recently said he expected to make a decision on the appointment by early January.

While DeSantis has not mentioned who is under consideration, Florida’s Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez has been floated as among the most likely replacements.
