The Big Apple’s LinkNYC kiosks will detail the history of Sept. 11, 2001, beginning Wednesday — allowing New Yorkers to walk through tales of the rescue and recovery efforts 25 years after the terror attacks.
The “Memory Makers 9/11” initiative highlights the stories of heroes who rebuilt the city by projecting them on LinkNYC screens across all five boroughs.
“In the days, weeks and months after the horrific terror attacks of September 11, 2001, New Yorkers came together in ways big and small to help our city recover,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement.
“We recovered together then, and we will remember together now – by telling the stories of the everyday heroes we lost, honoring the heroes who remain and recognizing that 9/11 was a day that never ended, with consequences that continue to shape us today.”
The memorial mapping details stories of New Yorkers who aided in the recovery not only on the day of the attacks, but in the days, weeks and months of uncertainty that followed.
A LinkNYC kiosk in Lenox Hill remembers how Sanitation worker Andrew Macchio, who was known for singing from the back of the truck during his Upper East Side collections, would spend his free time driving a water truck to hose down the dust of Ground Zero — stopping at St. Paul’s Chapel to serenade the first responders resting there.
In Brownsville, a road milling crew is memorialized for driving its caravan of trucks in the wake of the plane strikes through the pitch-black Brooklyn Battery Tunnel toward Manhattan, where it spent the next three months clearing the debris and repairing the streets.
Staten Island’s Fresh Kills is also on the map in recognition of the 1.7 million hours that city, state and federal agencies dedicated to sifting through 1.5 million tons of debris that was trucked to the landfill as part of one of the largest forensic recovery operations in American history.
The map, complete with all the stories and the profiles of the heroes, is available at on.nyc.gov/25years.
