CHINO, CA — Local dad Daxton Colt was reportedly having an enjoyable day at the local World War II aviation museum before he was forcibly removed from the premises for staying way past the normal open visiting hours of 10:00AM to 4:00PM.
The Planes of Fame museum in Chino, with its 160 vintage warplanes and 14-acre campus, attracts tens of thousands of aviation and military history enthusiasts per year. Some of those visitors, such as Colt, find themselves unable to pry themselves away from the elegant and iconic warbirds from a bygone era.
“Wow, would you just look at this gorgeous North American P-51A Mustang,” murmured Colt to nobody in particular, completely unaware that the museum had closed 30 minutes earlier and that his family had left around lunchtime. “This is the only original and authentic P-51A still flying in the entire world. And it’s neat to see a real-life example of the framed hinged canopy on the A model which eventually would give way to the superior and iconic teardrop bubble canopy of the D model. You know, this A model had the weaker Allison engine, which preceded the later Merlin-powered models. Of course, this really gave the Mustang an edge on high-altitude performance and speed that made them arguably the best fighter plane in Europe.”
“Yes, sir, she’s a fine warbird. A fine bird indeed,” he added, taking a long, yearnful look at Mrs. Virginia as security guards approached to escort him off the premises.
“Sir, look, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here,” interjected volunteer museum guide Pappy O’Hoolihan. “I didn’t shoot down 4 dirty Krauts in the war just to come back home and have to deal with ruffians like you, punk.”
At publishing time, Colt was spotted fleeing from security guards to get just one more glimpse of the beautiful Lockheed P-38J Lightning Skidoo.
