A popular Michigan library was forced to shut down after multiple critters spilled out of a DVD case that was returned after closing.

The Royal Oak Public Library announced on social media it temporarily closed for “health and safety reasons” after staff members discovered cockroaches crawling out of a DVD case as they were sorting through the book drop Saturday morning.

“The bugs were discovered in a DVD case when it was opened and the bugs came out,” the library posted on Instagram Saturday.

“It appeared to be multiple species of bugs, but we aren’t sure.”

Library staff, in the same post, said the DVD was returned sometime after the building closed on Friday, and upon discovering the bugs, immediately closed its doors, locked the book drops, and bagged all infected items until pest experts could clear up the problem.

“Let’s protect the staff, the library’s materials, and the things we borrow from other libraries,” Library Director Sandy Irwin told the Detroit Free Press.

“I’m a librarian, not a pest control professional, but I will look up 1,000 types of bugs.”

The announcement was made to the library's social media accounts.

Staff members did capture one of the bugs with tape but were unable to identity all the creepy-crawlies, she told People.

Pest control gave the library the green light to open Monday afternoon after inspecting the building, book drops and returned items, the library posted on social media, assuring the public the facility receives monthly pest inspections.

“Our pest control company inspected all of the items that had been returned, the book drops, and the building,” the library posted on Monday.

“No insects were to be found. The photos we shared showed that it was a cockroach.”
