Michigan QB Bryce Underwood makes transfer portal decision after Sherrone Moore scandal

Bryce Underwood isn’t going anywhere.

The Michigan man will return to Ann Arbor for the 2026 season, he announced in an Instagram post Monday night, following speculation that he might enter the transfer portal after Sherrone Moore’s firing.

Whether Underwood would stay with Michigan for a second season became a hot topic after Moore’s firing last month since he had committed to play for Moore and not the eventual next coach.

Michigan, which has one of the most vast alumni networks in the country, is already paying Underwood an obscene amount to be the Michigan signal caller, with multiple outlets projecting his package to be worth between $10 million and $12 million over four years.

Underwood had been projected to make $3 million for the 2025 season, making him one of the highest-paid college players in the country.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy helped lead his recruitment.

“We do five stars. We do No. 1 recruits in the country … Welcome to Michigan Bryce Underwood!!!” Portnoy said after Underwood committed to Michigan.

However, Portnoy said that he was tapped out when it comes to paying more money for the college star should Underwood ask to renegotiate his deal, only adding fuel to the transfer rumors.

“I’m out of it,” Portnoy said in December. “He’d have to have some big balls to say he wants to renegotiate now.”

It would appear that Underwood is not going back to the negotiating table for now, as he threw just 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions for a 9-4 Wolverines squad.

Underwood was also outplayed by fellow superstar college quarterback Arch Manning in the Citrus Bowl.

He will play next year for longtime Utah coach Kyle Whittingham after the Wolverines selected him to replace Moore.

Moore allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member that resulted in his termination, and he was later arrested on multiple charges including home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering.

Moore was accused of entering the home of the staff member — allegedly assistant Paige Shiver — without permission and grabbing knives and scissors while threatening to kill himself.
