Naked swim champ’s victim seen for first time after alleged water bottle killing — as family release heartbreaking message

Kin of a security guard who was allegedly battered to death with a water bottle by a college swim champ have released a heartbreaking statement along with touching first photos of the victim.

Michael Dyer, 63, was killed by 20-year-old Legend Storer while working at the Sands of Kahana resort in Maui on Aug. 5, authorities said.

Storer is accused of striking the married worker with a 5-gallon water bottle before tearing off on a naked rampage around the neighborhood until cops caught him.

The suspect, who is a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion, was indicted by a grand jury on the island Monday. According to court records filed by the County of Maui Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Storer faces charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure.

Dyer’s family set up a GoFundMe this week sharing details of the devastating loss and trying to raise money for his funeral costs and support of his widow Joy Dyer.

The page read: “Thankfully, Mike’s killer is in police custody, but Joy’s emotional journey is just beginning as she starts to process this devasting event. They were married for 26 years.

“We are trying to raise $20,000 to cover funeral costs for Mike. We are also trying to help Joy with therapy sessions and basic living expenses like rent and groceries. Every dollar will go towards Joy’s recovery as she begins her road to healing.

“It is already a difficult time for our family, and for those of you who know Joy, you understand that it is difficult for her to ask for help but we cannot do this alone.”

Surveillance footage, which has not been released, allegedly showed Storer attacking Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle shortly before Dyer was found unresponsive and pronounced dead.

Over an hour later, police received reports of a naked man wandering through the neighborhood. Officers located Storer 30 minutes later, suffering from abrasions, and took him to hospital.

Investigators reviewing the security video later confirmed the hospitalized man was the same person seen assaulting Dyer.

Court documents obtained by The California Post say that during the alleged burglary Storer was armed with a “dangerous instrument,” identified in charging papers as the water bottle.

He then escaped the condo complex without being seen.

Charging documents also indicate that due to the victim’s age, prosecutors are pursuing sentencing enhancements against Storer, including extended prison time and a mandatory minimum sentence without the possibility of parole if convicted of murder or related felony counts.

He was also charged with one count of indecent exposure for intentionally exposing himself under circumstances likely to cause an affront, court documents show.

Storer was first charged in Maui District Court on Aug. 7, 2026, before a grand jury formally indicted him in Circuit Court three days later on Aug. 10.

Storer attended Concordia University Irvine for one year before he transferred to the University of Hawaii. The decorated swimmer was a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion while attending Maui Prep, according to his athlete biography.

Concordia University Irvine confirmed Monday that Storer had attended the private Orange County institution and competed on its men’s swim team.

According to the Orange County Register, he did not re-enroll after the university dissolved its men’s swimming program in May 2025.

“After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student,” Ann Ashmon, the school’s associate vice president of strategic communications, told the paper.

Storer’s attorney declined to comment when contacted by the Register. His mother hung up when approached by a reporter, while his father did not respond.
