NCAA officially eliminates college football’s spring transfer portal window

The spring transfer portal has officially been eliminated in college football.

The NCAA’s Administrative Committee decided Wednesday to move to a single transfer portal window. The dates of that window are still to be determined.

The Football Oversight Committee voted early in September for the sport to move to a single 10-day transfer portal window. That proposed window would start Jan. 2 and end Jan. 11. However, the NCAA said that it would officially decide the dates for the window at a meeting in October after listening to feedback.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spoke out against the timing of the proposed January window earlier this month and said he believed most coaches in the Big Ten agreed with him.

“I just don’t quite understand how teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they’re still getting ready to play for games,” Day said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me.”

All but three non-playoff bowl games will be held by Jan. 2. The semifinals of the College Football Playoff are Jan. 8 and Jan. 9.

It’s possible the transfer portal window could be pushed back or extended after more opinions are heard. However, there’s not much wiggle room given the academic calendars across the country. If players want to participate in spring practices at their new schools, they need to be enrolled.

Sources told Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger that changes are also being made to the recruiting calendar.

The dead recruiting period would begin after the early signing window closes. High school players have the chance to sign with their school of choice for three days starting Dec. 3. If they do not sign during that window, the earliest they can sign with a school is Feb. 4.
