New York City is under Flood Watch Tuesday — with the National Weather Service warning of the potential for life-threatening flash flooding.
The Big Apple, along with parts of Long Island, the Hudson Valley, most of Connecticut, northern New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, is under Flood Watch.
“A slow-moving low-pressure system will bring multiple rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms Tuesday through Wednesday,” the National Weather Service said.
“There is potential for life-threatening flash flooding,” the advisory continued. “Isolated severe thunderstorms possible Tuesday afternoon and evening, mainly for northeast New Jersey and New York City.”
Some areas will be drenched with 2 to 5 inches of rain — while certain localities could get over 5 inches.
Parts of New York will be soaked with 2 to 3 inches of rain per hour, ABC 7 reported.
New York City, the Mid-Hudson, and Long Island have a Moderate risk (40-70%) of flash flooding, while the Capital Region and Mohawk Valley have a Slight risk (15-40%).
The rest of the Empire State has a Marginal risk (5-15%) of flash floods.
Heavy rain will continue through Wednesday morning, with areas across the Catskills seeing totals of 6 to 8 inches in just a matter of hours, making travel hazardous.
Hundreds of flights were canceled on Tuesday across New York area airports in anticipation of the dangerous storms.
They include 117 at JFK, 109 at LaGuardia, and 61 at Newark — affecting between 10 and 20% of all flights, ABC 7 reported.
As well as all five New York boroughs, nearby Nassau, Westchester, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland Counties are all affected by the Flood Watch.
In New Jersey, Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union Counties face fresh flooding fears.
Fairfield and New Haven Counties in Connecticut are also affected.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to be safe ahead of the heavy rain forecast across the state Tuesday and Wednesday.
“New York State will be experiencing a prolonged rain event beginning Tuesday that will bring heavy rains and cause flash flooding – New Yorkers should stay vigilant, stay informed, and use caution,” Governor Hochul said.
“As State agencies are ready and mobilized to keep New Yorkers safe, it is important for everyone to do their part by monitoring your local forecast and when in doubt, turn around, don’t drown,” she added.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also shared a warning from NYC Emergency Management as he ordered residents to play their part in “keeping themselves and their communities safe,” in a statement on X.
“New Yorkers should prepare now for showers and thunderstorms that will pick up [Tuesday] afternoon and could cause dangerous flash flooding — even a short period of rainfall can quickly flood streets, basements, and low-lying areas,” he wrote.
Monday night already saw powerful storms across New Jersey, bringing lightning and hail, flash flooding, and heavy rain.
