The Red River Rivalry brought one of the bigger upsets of the 2026 college football season.
Unranked Oklahoma knocked off No. 1 Texas on a last-second field goal to win 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, handing the Longhorns their first loss of the season on Saturday.
It gave the Sooners a measure of redemption after they lost as the No. 11 team in the nation to Michigan in Week 2, which they followed with getting steamrolled on the road by Georgia in their last game.
“I want these guys to experience victory, certainly in this game, (it) was incredibly important,” Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said.

Texas led 17-7 at the half and by seven points going into the fourth quarter, but were outscored by 10 points over the final 15 minutes.
A large part of the collapse can be attributed to the Arch Manning-led offense, which mustered just 41 yards and three punts across three drives in the third quarter.
The Longhorns, after a punt on their first drive of the fourth quarter — which came after an Oklahoma touchdown — were then in for further disaster.
Manning, on the second drive, avoided the rush on second-and-13 and heaved a pass down the field well out of the reach of any Texas target, but right into the grasp of Oklahoma’s Peyton Bowen, who ran it all the way back for a pick-six.
“I think we’ve got to do a better job, especially me, not getting loose with the ball,” said Manning, who also had three touchdown passes. “I think we beat ourselves a lot tonight.”
The nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning then mounted a seven-play, 75-yard drive that tied things up at 24.
But on the final Texas possession with under a minute to go and a chance to win or just keep overtime in play, Manning was again picked off with 19 seconds remaining.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said he thought Manning would probably want back the throw on Bowen’s pick-6, but credited Courtland Guillory for making the play on the second interception.

“I think Arch competed his tail off, and he made some tremendous plays,” Sarkisian said. “I thought there was a level of confidence, consistency and rhythm in which he was throwing the ball. We’ve got to continue to run the ball better so it’s not all on his shoulders of when he’s got to throw it to go make all these plays for us.”
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer connected on successive passes — for 13 and 20 yards — to set up Tate Sandell for the walk-off field goal.
“I thought about this game for 365 days,” Mateer said. “I think that was the longest fourth quarter I’ve ever been a part of. It was awesome and I’ll never forget it. But I knew 19 seconds left that this was the time.”
It was Oklahoma’s first game in the rivalry since 2023.
Manning finished 19-for-31 passing with 261 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Texas will host Florida, which suffered its own disastrous loss on Saturday to South Carolina, next week.
