Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of three-time Super Bowl champion Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has begun his jail time in Texas for his February DWI conviction, according to TMZ.
The former Mets reliever, 54, started his sentence around 4:53 p.m. Tuesday and is expected to be released on Oct. 31, a Smith County (Texas) jail official told the outlet.
Mahomes Sr. is serving 10 days in jail after being arrested on Feb. 3 on a charge of DWI for the third time or more in advance of his son’s third overall and second consecutive Super Bowl victory.
Part of Mahomes Sr.’s plea agreement included him pleading guilty to the charge in August. He received five years of probation, along with this jail stint, per TMZ’s report.
He previously received a second DWI charge in 2019 and spent 40 days in jail in 2019 and 2020.
During his February arrest in Tyler, Texas, the 11-season MLB veteran attempted to use his son’s pending Super Bowl start to help him escape trouble.
“Can I say one thing?” Mahomes Sr. asked his arresting officer. “My son is getting ready to play in the f–king Super Bowl, OK? Just listen to me. I am not drunk. I promise you. I’ve had some drinks. But he can’t have this right now. Listen, this can’t happen … Patrick Mahomes.”
The cops pulled Mahomes Sr. over since his registration had expired and arrested him after performing sobriety tests. He had a BAC of 0.23.
He had an open 16-ounce Coors beer in his car at the time of his arrest and told police he had consumed a few drinks at a local bar before driving.
Mahomes Sr. was released on a $10,000 bail.
“We’ve never had a star here in this area and now we got a chance to be a star and now we going to have a scandal now,” Mahomes Sr. said. “We’re gonna have a scandal for no f–king reason because my registration when he gifted me the car hasn’t gotten in yet, which would probably be in in the next day or two.”
He also said: “Dude, this is crazy. My son is getting ready to play in the f–king Super Bowl and I’m doing interviews, five or six a day, and then, now, this s–t’s going to be on the news which is going to f–k with him, and it’s probably going to f–k him up.
“And he probably won’t win the Super Bowl. But that’s fine. If that’s what y’all want to do, that’s good.”
The Chiefs did win the Super Bowl, defeating the 49ers in overtime, 25-22, to grab their third title in the past five seasons. Mahomes Sr. attended his son’s third championship triumph despite the arrest.
Mahomes Sr. has since gone sober, he said in an August Instagram post.
