Police K-9 shot and killed by illegal migrant gangbanger, harrowing footage shows

Harrowing new bodycam footage captures the moment a California police dog is shot and killed by an illegal migrant gangbanger during a dramatic, hours-long standoff.

Burbank Police Department K-9, Spike, was sent into a densely overgrown stretch along an interstate highway to flush out 37-year-old Jose Domingo Ayala Alas, a reputed member of the 18th Street Gang, after a traffic stop on Nov. 22, videos released by police this week show.

Suddenly, shots ring out, and Spike returns mortally wounded, the disturbing clip shows.

“A coordinated search was initiated using a police canine and a police helicopter,” Burbank police said in a press release on the incident.

“During the search, the canine located the suspect. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking the canine, before fleeing on foot.”

Spike was taken to a nearby vet but could not be saved, the department said.

The incident unfolded after police made a traffic stop near Interstate 5 around 6:40 p.m.

The unidentified driver and Alas, who was a passenger in the vehicle, told cops they did not have ID, and both were asked to step out of the vehicle — which is when Alas took off running and ducked into the dense shrubs along the highway, the videos show.

Unable to get Alas to surrender, cops at the scene sent Spike after him shortly after 8 p.m.

The police pup’s fatal shooting didn’t end the drama, with Alas refusing to surrender for hours and taking pot shots at police.

An armored SWAT vehicle was brought to the scene.

Finally, shortly before 11:30 p.m., Alas was shot and killed by police after refusing to surrender and taking more shots at police with a 9 mm handgun, the department said.

According to police, the reputed gang member had a criminal history that included gun charges, and entered the US illegally in 2010 after having been deported earlier.

Burbank police said a complete investigation into the shooting and standoff is ongoing.
