Preppy Princeton, NJ murder suspect charged with killing ex soccer star little brother, family cat near Ivy League campus: cops

A former college soccer star in Princeton, New Jersey, has been charged with murdering his own little brother — and a pet cat — over the weekend in an apartment near the campus of Princeton University.

Authorities say Matthew Hertgen, 31, allegedly used a knife and a golf club to stab and beat his 26-year-old brother, Joseph Hertgen, to death at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, NJ.com reported.

Cops found Joseph dead when they arrived following a 911 call, and his corpse showed signs of blunt-force trauma and had several slashes on it, the outlet said.

Matt Hertgen has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his younger brother.

Both brothers were once standout soccer players at Toms River North High School and played in college: Joseph for the University of Michigan, and Matthew for exclusive Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
