A rock singer’s tour bus flipped and crashed after its driver suffered a “sudden” medical emergency and died behind the wheel.
Sawyer Hill, 27, was traveling near the Colorado-Wyoming border with several of his bandmates last Wednesday when the vehicle “ran off the side of the road and flipped” in what he described as a “terrifying experience,” the Arkansas-born singer wrote on Instagram Tuesday.
David Jackson, 50, has since been identified as the bus driver – with his devastated daughter-in-law, Danni Wong, revealing he suffered a “sudden medical emergency” on board, according to a fundraiser she created.
Jackson was behind the wheel of a 2024 Freightliner M2 at the time of the crash, which left four people injured, Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesperson Aaron Brown told Cowboy State Daily.
The driver’s family has since revealed he had been living with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease — a chronic condition caused by plaque buildup in the arteries — unbeknownst to them. He was also epileptic.
An autopsy confirmed the Minnesota native died before the crash, according to the fundraising page.
Jackson’s family said in an online obit he died doing “what he loved, driving a tour bus.”
On Oct. 5, he told his Facebook fans that tour life wasn’t all “glitz and glamour.”
“This job isn’t for the faint of heart. We are a unique breed of people. We’ve been through a lot, and we do a lot in a single day to make a concert happen. The sacrifices we make to do this job are things most people will never truly understand,” he wrote.
“But when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like a job. There is, however, a certain level of insanity that comes with this life. That insanity is part of what makes us who we are.”
Hill was on his “Everybody’s Home, Nobody’s Happy” tour at the time of the accident – but has postponed the remaining gigs in the North American leg.
“After careful consideration, I’ve determined there is not a viable path forward to continue shows on the current Everybody’s Home, Nobody’s Happy tour in North America.. and that the focus and priority for my band and crew should be on processing and healing,” the singer wrote.
He’s set to tour Europe and Australia next year.
